Putley
is a very small village of 250 people. It lies 5 miles West
of Ledbury and 12 miles East of Hereford and is surrounded
by farmland and Apple orchards where they grow cider, cooking,
eating and juicing apples. The Big Apple is
held in the spring at Putley and in the village of Much Marcle
in the autumn.
You can sample the locally produced Cider and Perry that are
made at this time.
Unfortunately
we do not have a pub in the village but there are three pubs
near by which serve excellent food
after a good
walk or cycle. There is no village shop, but just over a mile
away is a well-stocked Farm Shop, “ROOTS”, which
sells organic and local produce. It has a café and sells
ready meals. We also have a Riding School just down the road.
Herefordshire
is a stunning county. Lying beside the Welsh borders it has
breathtaking scenery. The Malvern Hills are
very close and the market town of Ledbury 5 miles away sits
in the foothills, a thriving and historic town. The Malverns
are famous for Spring Water, which you can collect yourself
in bottles from the various springs in the surrounding area.
Walking, cycling or riding on the Malverns is a must. The views
from British Camp over Herefordshire and Worcestershire are
breathtaking. The Woolhope Dome also offers fine panoramic
views.
The cycling and walking in the surrounding area is fantastic
and challenging. There are set routes available ranging in
distance and capability. You can hire Canoes and paddle down
the River Wye. Visit country estates like Eastnor Castle , Hellens
House or the ruins of Welsh Castles. Out door and in door go
karting. Climbing at Symonds Yat. Exploring the Forest of Dean
and Clearwell Caves. Be brave at Go Ape. We even have a neighbouring
Tennis Court for hire.
Sample
the local Cider and see it being made in the traditional
style at Westons .
They also have a Rare Breeds Animal Farm and an excellent
restaurant, The Scrumpy House . Hereford is also
famous for its Perry made from pears, which is also made at
Westons.
Sample or photograph the beautiful Hereford cattle! Or just
enjoy the peace of the country and listen and watch the wildlife,
buzzards, kites, badgers, hares, foxes, dragonflies etc.
If
you like Art, there is the Ceramic café in
Ledbury and Hereford and in the surrounding area and in Ledbury
there
are many courses to do, basket weaving, painting, bookbinding,
ceramics, bodging and more.
Ludlow
and Leominster for the antique hunter and Hay on Wye for
the bookworm are all approx 40mins away
by car. Malvern
Theatre is
20mins drive away and has some excellent productions. It also
has a cinema. Hereford has The Courtyard Theatre and
a cinema showing Art Films. The Regency town of Cheltenham
is 40 mins drive away and has shopping for the girls, theatre
and cinema. Gardeners can enjoy many beautiful gardens – Hampton
Court , Hellens and the Wier just to name but a few.
As you can see there are many things to do in Herefordshire
and if you would like to contact me for any more information
or questions I would be glad to help.
